Why is it important that I buy organic cotton? How is it more eco friendly than conventionally grown cotton?

Organic cotton utilizes growing methods and materials that replenish and maintain soil fertility and build biologically diverse agriculture. Organic cotton is grown without the use of toxic pesticides, fungicides, herbicides and fertilizers. In addition, federal regulations prohibit the use of genetically engineered seed for organic farming. All cotton sold as organic in the United States must meet strict federal regulations in how the cotton is grown.

Conventionally grown cotton uses more insecticides than any other crop. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that, in the United States, 1.2 pounds of insecticides and 2.1 pounds of herbicides are applied to each acre of cotton. These chemicals are not only a danger to the environment but a potential health hazard to people and animals that live near the cotton fields.

What is soy protein fiber and why is it more eco friendly than other fabrics?

Soybeans are a sustainable resource that does not require chemicals to grow effectively. The soybean protein fiber fabric is made from the leftover soybean pulp from tofu and soymilk production. All substances used in the production of soybean protein fiber are of a harmless nature.

What makes bamboo an environmentally friendly alternative?

Bamboo is a highly renewable resource. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world (It can grow up to 1-3 feet per day and reaches full maturity in 3-4 years). It can spread quickly and has been used to improve soil quality in eroded landscapes. It is a hardy plant and grows naturally without the use of pesticides or fertilizers. It also requires little water to grow.

Bamboo fiber is made from the refined pulp of the bamboo plant. Bamboo fabric (both mechanically and chemically manufactured) has a much lighter environmental impact than conventionally grown cotton fabric and fossil-fuel derived polyester synthetic fabrics.

Bamboo clothing is 100% biodegradable and can be completely decomposed in the soil by micro-organisms and sunlight without leaving behind any harmful byproducts

Overall…

When we buy “green” products we are not only keeping these potentially harmful chemicals away from our children but we are also encouraging companies (via consumer demand) to use materials and manufacturing methods that are better for our environment.
